The year is 1957. The place is unpicturesque Paisley and the day is a typical one in the slab room of AF Stobo, carpet makers.

Elvis is King, teddy-boys are all the rage and teenagers are getting their act together. For three boys trapped in a Scottish carpet factory, 1957 is all about paint-grinding, pulling and posing. Only their respective dreams enable them to withstand the toil and tedium of the paint-mix room. Phil dreams of Art School, but is hampered by the increasingly erratic behaviour of his mother; Spanky imagines himself the new Elvis, living a life of luxury in America; Hector, the butt of all their jokes, hankers after promotion to a design desk and dares to hope for a date with Lucille. A kindly secretary takes Phil under her wing, Spanky has his eye on a prize at the staff dance and Hector imagines Lucille will be his date. But as the big day approaches, the crisis in their lives reach a climax and harsh reality breaks their dreams.

John Byrne transforms his acclaimed play into this cracking cinematic treat that captures the anarchical mood of the post-war generation.
