The year is 1944. A marine Air Force regiment is stationed at a small airfield. They live with their families, leading a seemingly normal life. And yet, for the pilots, any air mission may prove to be their last. Director Semyon Aranovich directs a film of originality and beauty, combining historical combat footage with a mix of black and white and murky color to create a fairly seamless narration about those Soviet pilots and the women they meet and/or lose.
“Torpedo Bombers” is based on the short stories of the acclaimed Russian writer Yuri German (father of famous director Aleksei German).
