In 1974 Tibor Varga created the Tibor Varga Foundation which, in collaboration with the company Philharmonia, is the editor of this unreleased "Tibor Varga CD Collection". This collection of 24 CD's is distinguished as an artistic and historic documentation, in tribute to a great musician of world renown who profoundly affected the history of musical interpretation.

All of the works on the present disc were recorded originally on a wax disk, a procedure which does not permit subsequent corrections or modifications, which are normal in today's recording studios.
The present disk thus possesses a double claim to documentary value: first, it bears witness to the musical and technical maturity of an artist, who has always considered virtuosity not as an end in itself, but as a means and indispensable condition for attaining more elevated artistic goals. Also, with several of the works included here, it reveals a repertoire which until now has not been available on a compact disk recording.

This CD includes works by Hubay, Chopin, Ferrara, Stravinsky, Francoeur/Kreisler, Dohnányi, Principe, Geszler, De Sarasate, Szymanowsky, Paganini, and De Falla.

On this third CD, Tibor Varga interpretates the Concerto for Violin and Ochestra no.5 in la major (KV 219) and the Symphony no.36 in do major KV 425 ("Linz") - an enchanment from beginning to end. As a conductor, he flirts marvellously with the charms of the symphonies of the master of Salzburg.

These recordings by Varga of the Concertos for Violin of Tchaikovsky and Bruch serve as models in the history of musical interpretation. The purity of melodic line, the absolute accuracy of pitch, the expressive perfection of a playing literally sheathed in flawless phrasing, where everything is at once reflective yet supremely natural - all applied in a manner particularly suited to the Concerto of Tchaikovsky. There is a similar reaction to the Concerto op. 26 of Bruch. Varga gives to this work, notably in the second movement, with its abundant melodies, a depth heretofore unknown.

Schubert's String Quintet in C Major op. 163 (D 956) is a musical autobiography, a philosophy in sound revealing both melancholy and vision. Without artifice or affectation, the music of Schubert seems to spring alive, and one can easily recognize the hand of the author: each detail, no matter how minute, finds its justification as part of a profound formal plan.

While Tibor Varga was living in London, one of his closest friends was the Hungarian composer Matyas Seiber, also living at that time in England. After the premier performance of one of Seibers works in London, with Tibor Varga as interpreter, the two musicians engaged in a long discussion to define the concept of beauty in music. At the end, Seiber declared: "In the final analysis, I always come back to a very simple thought: if God, at the last minute of my life, gave me the choice of a single piece of music, I would have to choose between the slow movement of the Mozart Quintet, or (and maybe even moreso) the slow movement of the Quintet of Schubert."

Two days later, Matyas Seiber died following a tragic accident. Tibor Varga immediately took the spontaneous decision to record the Schubert Quintet in C Major, op. 163, in memory of his friend.

It is not only as a soloist and orchestral conductor, but also as an interpreter of Chamber works, that Tibor Varga remains faithful to his principies: to go to the essential in music, to live it and to communicate it. "I would like to be younger, to write more works for you" (Arnold Schönberg).

- JUDITH JUSTICE, a violinist born in Cincinnati (U.S.A.), studied with Tibor Varga several years before becoming his assistant.

- MATTI HIRVIKANGAS also worked under the direction of Tibor Varga. He holds today the chair of First Viola with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Helsinki.

- MARTIN OSTERTAG is a solo-cellist with the SWF-Symphony Orchestra, Germany, and professor in a German Academy of Music. He was associated for several years with the Tibor Varga Chamber Music Ensemble.

- SUSAN RYBICKI, cellist, was a student of André Navarra, and teaches today at the conservatories of Lausanne and Sion.

Reunited every summer during the Tibor Varga Festival Sion, the Ensemble of the Tibor Varga Festival is devoted exclusively to Chamber music of the 18th to the 20th centuries, performing concerts and recording major works. The present compact disk of the String Sextet op. 4 of Arnold Schönberg - a work composed at the turn of the Century, bridging two musical eras - demonstrates the sophistication of style as well as the extraordinary refinement of this ensemble: the schönbergian vision of the Transfigured Night reveáls a true musical drama which could not be expressed with more delicate nuances of tone and colour.

This ninth CD includes interpretations of Divertimento K 136, Adagio en mi majeur K 261, Rondo en do majeur K 373 and Symphonie en sol mineur K 550.

The Divertimenti K 136 (125a), K 137 (125b) and K 138 (125c) together form a group of works composed during the first months of 1772, probably for the court of Salzburg under the reign of the Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus de Colloredo. It is assumed that the title of the manuscript, "3 Divertimenti", was not assigned by Mozart himself. Nevertheless these works, known also under the title "Drei Salzburger Symphonien ohne Bläser" (Three Salzburg Symphonies without Winds), share the common characteristics of the generic "divertimento" as opposed to such forms as the "serenade", "sinfonia" and "sonata". In the Divertimento K 136, Mozart makes use of a model tracing back to the Neapolitan Opera Sinfonia : Allegro - Andante (Menuet) - Presto (Allegro). The first movement, Allegro, in lively animation (but turning mysteriously in the minor mode, within the quasi-development of the middle section), is followed by an Andante which seems to 'exhale' in a kind of solemn glow, the sensitive quasi-recitative character of the melody lending a certain expressive depth. The last movement, a Presto full of spirit and energy, marries brilliant virtuosity with courtly grace.

It was probably at the request of Antonio Brunetti that Mozart, at the end of the year 1776, created the Adagio K 261 as an alternative for the middle movement of his Concerto for Violin in A major, K 219 : Brunetti, who was named musical director and first Violinist of the Salzburg court in March 1776, judged the original Adagio K 219, bigger and more formally elaborate than K 261, to be "too studied". It was also at the request of Brunetti that Mozart composed the Rondo in C major, K 373, which was first performed on April 8, 1781, in the Viennese palace of Prince Rudolph Joseph de Colloredo. Like the Adagio K 261, this Rondo - Mozart's last work for violin solo with orchestral accompaniment composed in füll -unites mozartian melody with a charm replete with humor and grace.

The Symphony in G minor, K 550, is the second in the grouping of the last three symphonies through which Mozart arrived at the height of his symphonie achievement. The Symphonies K 543, K 550 and K 551 (the "Jupiter") were created in the summer of 1788 in a brief period of approximately six weeks. There seems to be no record of whether they were commissioned, and it is presumed that Mozart originally composed them for a séries of concerts which probably never took place. For the Symphony K 550 Mozart made subsequent changes to the manuscript, adding two clarinets and modifying the oboe parts. The autograph was later given as a gift by the countess Anna de Hesse to Johannes Brahms. ”

Performers

- Arlette Chedel : is equally at home in the concert hall and opera house. In addition to her work at Geneva Opera, she has performed in numerous operatic productions abroad, including Eugene Onegin, Boris Godounov and Faust. She has made several guest appearances at the Festival Tibor Varga.

- Eva Frick-Galliera : studied organ, composition and piano at Milan Conservatory, where she became professor of organ and organ composition in 1966. She has taken part in many international music festivals and has made a number of recordings for radio and gramophone. Tibor Varga is heard leading the Festival Ensemble, consisting of Tibor Varga and Judith Justice (violins), Matti Hirvikangas (viola), Martin Ostertag (cello) and Markus Maibach (double bass). Tibor Varga also conducts the two orchestral works in this recording.

This compact disc presents Tibor Varga not only as an interpreter of chamber music, but illuminates the unity as well as the diversity of European musical art, from the romantic movement to the beginning of the 20th century. The Sonata F-A-E, relatively little known, is representative of German romanticism. The Trio for Piano by Ravel illustrates the tendency of French musical art of this period toward the unknown and exotic, with its excessive fantasy, richness of timbre and subtle expression. French musical culture contributed to musical development in Europe, as did countries of Eastern Europe, deeply rooted in their folklore and native musical character. Eastern European music is represented in this recording by a work of Smetana, who is considered the father of Czechoslovakia's national music.

The present version of the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra op. 61 of Beethoven was recorded in public in September 1961, in the Musikhalle of Hamburg. Due to unforeseen transportaron difficulties, the orchestra Coming from Zagreb arrived in Hamburg literally at the last minute, only just avoiding a cancellation of the concert. There was hardly enough time for a rapid rehearsal together with the soloist and the sound engineer, causing a difficult situation for the recording technique. Moreover, the entire material of the recording disappeared for about 30 years and has only been rediscovered in 1991, enabling finally the production of the present disk. Notwithstanding the occasional fluctuations of the intensity, caused by the disposition of the microphones as well as by the movements of the soloist during the concert, the publication of a recording of such rare and highly artistic interprétation seems justified, by reason of the depth of its musical content.

When asked the profession of Tibor Varga, his own response was neither "violinist," nor "virtuoso," nor "professor," but just "musician". Behind this apparently simple title is nevertheless hidden a conception of music which is universal, not to be understood as a profession but as a perception of music in its full magnitude. While Tibor Varga is represented in other recordings of this collection as a specialist in Chamber music repertoire, this disc presents him as orchestral conductor in the Overture to "Don Giovanni", and as conductor and soloist in both the Concerto for Violin KV 216 and - playing the viola - the Sinfonia concertante KV 364 (320d). Those familiar with the music of Mozart know how his concertos open into higher dimensions of expression, which one finds as well, although realized by other means, in his operas. The brilliant description of personality, the psychological insight and the human perspective with which Mozart equipped his characters, has not been surpassed to this day. When we speak of French music, who would not think immediately of Debussy and Ravel ? Moreover, the French musical endowment, inherited from the renaissance and baroque masters traversing romanticism and the contemporary era, reveals a multitude of less known musical treasures. The objective of the present recording is to make available to a greater audience a number of rarely played works in contemporary French music literature. Dimitri Chostakovich's String Quartet No.8 "In memory of the victims of fascism and war", heard here in the orchestration by Tibor Varga (Op. 110b), and Richard Strauss's Metamorphosen constitute monuments of the musical repertoire attesting to a profound musical and human sensitivity. These dramatic, moving works with their symbolic quotations, are reactions to the same event: the destructive violence of the Second World War. Thus it is not mere chance that both compositions should end with the double basses on a low C, the lowest sound that a stringed instrument is capable of producing.

The Divertimento KV 334 (320b) was composed in 1779-80 in Salzburg, in all likelihood for Sigismund Robinig von Rottenfeld (1760-1823), a friend of Mozart and member of a University's law school. In fact, in letters addressed to his father (1781), W.A. Mozart designates this piece as "Robinig music", which would seem to support this hypothesis. Mozart himself appears to have attached importance to this composition, one of his main chamber music works from the final Salzburg years, since he requested a copy of it in Vienna in July 1781. With the Divertimento KV 334, Mozart reached a peak in the art of the serenade and divertimento: after 1779, he would write no further serenade for orchestra, and his composition of divertimentos, which saw a final burst with the Musical Joke KV 522 and Eine kleine Nachtmusik KV 525, diminished during the Viennese period. Like the symphonies, these works are characterised by the search for a concentration, an internalisation of expression, and a refinement of form and content.
