For thousands of years, the biblical Psalter has been the liturgical “heart” of the three main book religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Psalms announce the word of God and, simultaneously, contain the full range of human experience.
Jews, Christians and Muslims sing and listen to the same songs of lament and joy, confessions of sin, hymns of praise and adoration. In this project of the King’s Singers and Sarband, psalm settings by composers from three religions give an example of how psalms can be a source of spirituality, a political instrument, a link between tradition and modernity and, above all, a bridge connecting human beings.

This innovative CD reminds us that Europe in the 1700s was intensely curious about Turkish culture, once hostilities between the West and the Ottoman Empire had finally ceased. Perhaps the most famous example of Turkish music influencing European classical music comes in the finale to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. However, by that time, Turkish effects were already passé. A better example is offered by Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio. The overture to that opera contains riotous percussion punctuations typical of Turkish janissary bands. To hear it played by Concerto Köln, a classical original instruments ensemble, and Sarband, a German-based group specializing in traditional Turkish music, is a joyously noisy treat.

Ensemble SARBAND was founded in March 1986 with the aim of showing, through concerts and research, the relationship between early European music and the musical cultures of Islam. SARBAND is a term used in a 14th-century Syrian manuscript to refer to the coupling of two parts within a musical suite.
SARBAND is a unique kind of musical ensemble, which draws its inspiration from various musical cultures, integrating them into its programme. Their multi-facetted répetoire comprises oriental and occidental music from the Middle Ages, as well as Baroque and contemporary musici ietimes also presented, in larger-scale projects, in scenical versions.
The roots of medieval music are to be found in the oriental musical cultures. Spain and Italy in particular were strongly influenced by musical elements from the oriental world: monophony, modal systems and rich ornamentation.
These roots are frequently denied or ignored to this day. The picture of Europe as the centree of the world ist still deeply engrained in Eurpean consciousness. The influence of Islam on the Europe of the Middle Ages was, as already mentioned, considerable.
The musical director of SARBAND, Vladimir Ivanoff gave special attention in designing programmes and selecting the Turkish, Italian and German musicians, to ensure that the musicial dialogue goes beyond the cultural taboos between Christianity and Islam existing today, that European and Arab instruments are both to be heard in Moslem Sufi Music prayers and Italian religious songs.

The most precious treasure from the library of Montserrat is a codex from the late fourteenth century, the 'Llibre Vermell' or 'Red Book'. The manuscript is named after it's red velvet cover which stems from the late 19th century.
35 of the original 172 sheets in folio of this manuscript are lost today. Besides various other contents, mainly for liturgical use, one of the fascicles (folio 21v - 27r) contains ten musical works (notated during the years 1396-1399).
