Halo CE stands for Halo Custom Edition. Its a standalone multiplayer client of Halo (no campaign mode) thats free to download for all owners of Halo for PC. The main difference between CE and the basic multiplayer mode in Halo PC is the ability to use custom maps and content. Using the HEK (Halo Editing Kit), people can create their own maps and weapons and bipeds, and really, whatever the hell else they want. They can then distribute these maps over the Internet for others to download and play on.

Obviously, because of the user-editing capability, many maps out there just plain suck. However, some real masterpieces have been created. Complete maps from Halo 2 have been made into Halo CE maps, complete with all the weapons and vehicles. Theres such a great variety of maps and content.

If you have Halo PC and the CD key, download the CE installer from halofiles.com or halomods.com. A few good sites for the latest and best custom maps are halomaps.org, files.halomods.com, and halofiles.com. Take care; the maps tend to add up the hard drive space taken up. Also, when you have many maps installed for CE, it can take a while to load up.

To install maps for Halo Custom Edition, simply download them (usually in a WinRAR archive) and open the archive. Then, just extract them into your CE Maps directory (by default, this is C:\\Program Files\\********* Games\\Halo Custom Edition\\Maps). The next time you open Halo CE, the maps will be there, ready to play.

Maps that you install on Custom Edition will not have any effect on the normal Halo for PC whatsoever. They are two completely independent programs. Keep in mind that you wont be able to play on a server running a map that you dont have.

Switch between foot-based fighting and vehicle-based attacks, where you can pilot flyers, tanks, buggies, or dropships, or man the guns while another squad member drives. Multiplayer action in Halo: Combat Evolved gives players the option of co-op missions or free-for-all shootouts.
