Major League Soccer (MLS) is a professional soccer league based in the United States and sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation (U.S. Soccer). The league comprises 18 teams, 16 in the U.S. and two in Canada. MLS represents the top tier of the American and Canadian soccer pyramids.

Major League Soccer was founded in 1993 as part of the United States' bid to host the 1994 FIFA World Cup.[1] The first season took place in 1996 beginning with 10 teams. Seasons typically run from March to November, with each team scheduled to play 34 games in the 2011 regular season. Ten teams will compete in the 2011 postseason MLS Cup Playoffs culminating in the championship game, MLS Cup.

The 2011 Major League Soccer season is the 91st season of first division soccer in the United States and the current, 16th season of Major League Soccer. The season marked the arrival of two new league clubs, Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, whose cities previously had clubs of similar name play in the USSF D2 Pro League. Each team will play a balanced schedule; playing every team twice: home and away. With the two new clubs being based on the west coast the league announced on January 28, 2011 that Houston Dynamo would move into the Eastern Conference.

The first match of the regular season was on March 15, when the Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the Seattle Sounders FC 1–0 at Qwest Field. The regular season will conclude with several league games on October 23.[2] Subsequently, the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs will culminate through November 20, leading up to MLS Cup 2011, the championship game. Specific playoff dates have not been announced as of yet.
