Snimljen u praznom amfiteatru vulkanskih stijena Vezuva u ranu jesen 1971., "Pink Floyd - Live At Pompeii" redateljski je pokušaj Adriana Mabena vizualno dočarati nam svu šarolikost, inovativnost, maštovitost i nadrealnost glazbe ovog velikog benda.

Kao zaboravni turist u posjeti Pompejima - koji su postali velika turistička atrakcija zahvaljujući golemoj nesreći 79. godine poslije Krista kad je erupcija Vezuva u smrt odnijela živote nekoliko tisuća ljudi prekrivši čitav grad nekoliko metara debelim slojem lave i pepela - Adrian Maben tražio je jedne noći svoju putovnicu po podu amfiteatra. I upravo ga je ondje sveprisutna sablasna tišina i općenito tjeskobna atmosfera sjetila na glazbu Pink Floyda.



Pink Floydi prihvatili su sudjelovati u Mabenovoj viziji 'velikog otvorenog prostora masivnih stijena' i uskoro je amfiteatar bio opremljen i ozvučen kako bi grupa održala koncert uživo izvodeći pjesme koje će kasnije biti kamen temeljac svakog njihovog budućeg koncerta. Nakon što spomenemo nastup uživo, iduća riječ morala bi biti 'publika'. No, publike ovdje nema... Čak dapače, nema nikoga osim članova benda, Adriana Magena i njegovih kamera.

Osnovna Mabenova ideja bila je maknuti publiku s koncerta (slično je bilo s Jonathanom Demmom i Talking Headsima na "Stop Making Sense", no ondje je ipak bilo prisutno nešto ljudi), tako da je već s prvim kadrom DVD-a posve jasno što će se dogoditi i kako je to zamišljeno: Široki plan amfiteatra (poput uvodnih scena Leoneovih westerna), polagano sužavanje kadra prema članovima benda uz početak pjesme "Echoes" (ista slika, ali obrnutim redoslijedom prati završetak filma).








Vješto manevrirajući između dnevnih, suncem okupanih snimaka i onih noćnih, s prilično nelagodnim osjećajem kad shvatite da oko vas kilometrima nema ni žive duše, a amfiteatar svijetli kao Betlehem u mrklom mraku, Maben tijekom izvođenja pjesama ubacuje svoje vizije (snimke užarene lave, uzlijetanje raketa, muzeje, vulkane, digitalnu rekonstrukciju Pompeja, poglede iz Svemira, slike isparavajućih stijena i koječega koje je nemoguće opisati ukoliko niste pod utjecajem opijata) tvoreći tako čisti art-rock film. Osnovna razlika između originalne i redateljske verzije filma jest upravo u količini Mabenovih vizija.

Srećom, kao dodatak nudi se originalni film, pa ukoliko Mabenove vizualne podražaje počnete shvaćati kao napor, a ne kao nadopunu i prijelaz iz audio u vizualno, uvijek možete okušati sreću s originalom.

Svakako ćete primijetiti gotovo potpunu odsutnost Rogera Watersa i Richarda Wrighta tijekom koncertnog dijela DVD-a. Naime, kako sam Maben objašnjava u jednom od dodataka na disku, materijal je jednostavno zagubljen, a nemoguće je bilo riješiti nastalu situaciju na bilo koji drugi način (isto kao što je "One Of These Days" fokusirana isključivo na bubnjara Nicka Masona, a zapravo je on bio najmanje sniman, no snimci ostalih članova su se zagubili).

U međusobnom dogovoru, Maben i Pink Floydi složili su se kako bend smije izvoditi pjesme koje želi uz potpunu slobodu izražavanja što će se razviti do neslućenih razmjera počevši od "A Saucerful Of Secrets" koja će svakako ostati upamćena po Watersovom lupanju po gongu u sjeni Sunca, Gilmourovom igranju sa sliderom u sjedećem položaju i Wrightovim bjesomučnim udaranjem po klaviru.

A ta potpuna sloboda izražavanja otišla je u jednoj pjesmi možda mrvicu predaleko, premda predstavlja neku vrstu bizarne zabave: "Mademoiselle Nobs" treba pogledati kako bi se povjerovalo: Waters na basu, Gilmour na usnoj harmonici, Wright glumi stalak za mikrofon; cijeli bend podređen je glavnoj zvijezdi večeri: Afganistanskom hrtu koji 'pjeva' u mikrofon.

Osim samog koncerta uživo na Pompejima, Mabenov film služio je i za promociju tada novodolazećeg albuma grupe: "Dark Side Of The Moon". Dokumentarac i intervjui s članovima benda o snimanju novog albuma maestralno su odglumljeni: Snimke iz Abbey Roada kazališno su lažirane, jer je album "Dark Side Of The Moon" u trenutku snimanja tog dokumentarca već odavna bio zgotovljen.

Film je jedno, a stvarnost nešto posve drugo: Samo su pjesme "Echoes (oba dijela)", "A Saucerful Of Secrets" i "One of These Days" snimane na Pompejima. Ostale pjesme snimljene su u pariškom studiju ispred plavog ekrana. Pa i taj dio odsviran na Pompejima nije bio snimljen u jednom kadru, odjednom, već u više navrata (lako je za uočiti nestajanje i ponovno pojavljivanje bubnjarevih naočala).

Premda "Live At Pompeii" možda nije koncert u punom smislu riječi, nedvojbeno je zarobio trenutak glazbene genijalnosti jedne od najutjecajnije i najvažnije grupe svih vremena, u njihovom naponu snage zorno prikazujući nam kako im nije potrebna publika da bi stvarali i eksperimentirali. jedan od ciljeva glazbe jest stvarati slike, a Maben je bio taj koji je imao privilegiju predstaviti svoj svijet inspiriran glazbom Pink Floyda.

Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii is a 1972 film featuring Pink Floyd performing six songs in the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy. It was directed by Adrian Maben and recorded in the month of October with 24 tracks studio quality without a live audience.

The performances of "Echoes," "A Saucerful of Secrets," and "One of These Days" were filmed from October 4, 1971 to October 7, 1971. The remaining songs were filmed in a Paris studio, along with additional front projection footage for insertion into the Pompeii performances. The sequences in Paris were filmed in late 1971/early 1972, and can be distinguished by the absence of Richard Wright's beard. This version was released in cinemas in September 1972 and is also included on the DVD edition as an extra feature.

In August 1974, another version was released combining the original film with supposed recording sessions of The Dark Side of the Moon at Abbey Road Studios. These sessions were actually staged for the film[citation needed], as the recording of the album had been completed when these sessions were filmed in January 1973 and the band was mixing the album at the time.

Delicate Sound of Thunder is a Pink Floyd live double album from the David Gilmour-led era of the band which was recorded over five nights at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York in August 1988 and mixed at Abbey Road Studios in September 1988. It was released on 22 November 1988, through EMI Records in the United Kingdom and Columbia Records in the United States. This was the last Pink Floyd release made with vinyl as its primary medium; all subsequent releases have been made with CD as their primary medium.

The band recorded and filmed their series of shows at the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta, Georgia in November 1987 for a potential live concert film and album. However, the band were not happy with the results. Consequently, the material from these shows would make up videos and B-sides for the A Momentary Lapse of Reason singles and later these shows were released as a bootleg recordings entitled Pink Floyd: The Calhoun Tapes and Would You Buy A Ticket To This Show. Then in August 1988, the band went to Nassau Coliseum and filmed and recorded their five night stand for Delicate Sound of Thunder at the end of the initial Momentary Lapse 1987/88 tour.

The album was released in 1988 as a double LP, double cassette, and a double CD, each format containing a slightly different track listing. The album includes many works from A Momentary Lapse of Reason as well as quite a few from older albums. The double LP format did not have "Us and Them" on the track listing. Both the double LP and the double cassette had "Wish You Were Here" between "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" and "Comfortably Numb".

Although David Gilmour stated around the time of its release and on a radio interview in 1992 that the album contained no studio overdubbing whatsoever, he embellished the tracks during mixing with some extra acoustic guitar on "Comfortably Numb", according to engineer Buford Jones. In addition, some harmonies were replaced by studio re-takes: Richard Wright re-did his vocal on "Us and Them" and Sam Brown replaced Rachel Fury's part in "Comfortably Numb".[1]

Delicate Sound of Thunder reached #11 on the Billboard 200 and is currently listed as Triple Platinum in U.S. sales — it was certified Gold and Platinum on January 23, 1989 and Triple Platinum in April 1997.

Delicate Sound of Thunder became the first rock album to be played in space, as Soviet cosmonauts took it aboard Soyuz TM-7. They left the cassette box on Earth to save weight. The members of Pink Floyd were present at the launch. The double LP was also the band's only album to be officially released in the Soviet Union by the state-owned label Melodiya.
