    Boards Of Canada

BOARDS OF CANADA - Catalog 3

Catalog 3 is Boards of Canada's earliest known release. The use of the name Catalog 3 could imply the existence of two prior releases (which would be given catalog numbers 1 and 2) on the band's music70 label, although record labels do not always assign catalog numbers sequentially.
Catalog 3 has been described as having "three lengthy tracks of rather uneventful ambient electronica ("Line Two", "Breach Tones", "Visual Drone 12") and two shorter tracks." The same source felt that "their mellow, disjointed electronica was not particularly revolutionary."
The album has not been heard by those outside of the band's friends and family.

I ONLY HAVE TRACK 5 TO THIS CD IF ANYONE HAS THIS CAN THEY PLEASE PM ME

    Tracks:

    1. "Line Two" – 10:42
    2. "Drone 18" – 6:40

    4. "Breach Tones" – 8:13

BOARDS OF CANADA - Acid Memories

Acid Memories is the name of Boards of Canada's second known release. The Jockey ~censored~ article by Richard Southern describes Acid Memories as:
"Absurdly rare, cassette-only release from the barely teen Boards, then six-strong. Guitars meet electronics in embryonic but recognisably Boards-ian melodicism."
It has been said that the album is "even less imposing" than its predecessor, Catalog 3.[1]
Of the album's six tracks, only a 24 second excerpt of "Duffy" (posted on the EHX website in the late 1990s) has been heard by those outside of the band's friends and family.

    Tracks

    1. "Duffy" – 2:18
    2. "Growing Hand" – 4:55
    3. "Petina" – 4:49
    4. "Stry Craty Bya" – 8:03
    5. "Helter Skelter" – 6:13
    6. "Echo The Sun" – 6:26

BOARDS OF CANADA - Closes Vol. 1

Closes Vol. 1 is Boards of Canada's third known release. It has been said that the album is "even less imposing" than the band's first known release, Catalog 3.[1]
The album has not been heard by those outside of the band's family and friends. MP3s labeled "Godever" (1:46), "Treeline" (1:12), and "Trillions" (3:31) are not the tracks from Closes Vol. 1; the latter two are definitely not by Boards of Canada.
4 tracks have the title Close1 through Close4. Some track titles have mathematical connotations: Tends Towards (from analysis, limits, etc.), Numerator (fractions), Trillions, 5d (5-dimensional).

    Tracks

    1. "Treeline" – 1:02
    2. "Godever" – 1:51
    3. "True Map" – 5:22
    4. "Close1" – 0:50
    5. "5d" – 5:21
    6. "Focus On The Spiral" – 1:28
    7. "Tends Towards" – 8:48
    8. "Close2" – 1:04
    9. "Eye / Ear" – 6:58
    10. "Helios Sound" – 0:30
    11. "Ithcus Sound" – 0:30
    12. "Found The Way" – 6:06
    13. "Close3" – 0:26
    14. "Numerator (Original)" – 6:31
    15. "Fonec" – 5:42
    16. "Trillions" – 3:19
    17. "Close4" – 0:34

BOARDS OF CANADA - Play By Numbers

Play By Numbers is the name of Boards of Canada's fourth known release. The Jockey ~censored~ article by Richard Southern describes Play by Numbers as follows: "Five-track CD from what was now a trio, boasting a My Bloody Valentine influence in places, shifting further into electronics in others." It has also been said that the album, "with the 9-minute Infinite Lines of Colourful Sevens, showcased a more creative approach."[1]
Of the album's five tracks, only a 56-second excerpt of Wouldn't You Like To Be Free (posted on the EHX website in the late 1990s) has been heard by those outside of the band's friends and family.

    Tracks

    1. "Remmy Kid" – 0:58
    2. "Wouldn't You Like To Be Free" – 5:40
    3. "Infinite Lines of Colourful Sevens" – 9:18
    4. "Numerator" – 4:37
    5. "Echelon" – 5:48

BOARDS OF CANADA - Hoopers Bay EP

Hooper Bay is the name of Boards of Canada's fifth known release. Hooper Bay introduced the use of children's voices (see Jockey ~censored~ interview), a technique which would remain a staple of the band's style through the release of Geogaddi. It has been said that the three longest tracks on the EP mark the beginning of the band's "mature phase".[1]
Hooper Bay is also Alaskan village, a Cup'ik Eskimo settlement; the native name is Naparagamiut, but the name "hooper bay" came from a Post Office with that name established in the area.
Of the EP's five tracks, only a 35-second excerpt of Circle (posted on the EHX website in the late 1990s) has been heard by those outside of the band's friends and family. A set of MP3s labeled Hooper Bay but with significantly shorter track times than the actual EP can be found on P2P networks; however, this set is mis-labeled and is not music by Boards of Canada.

    Tracks

    1. "Seward Leaf" – 7:02
    2. "Geiser" – 5:15
    3. "Circle" – 2:38
    4. "Noatak" – 8:41
    5. "Point Hope" – 7:16

BOARDS OF CANADA - Boc Maxima

Limited to fifty copies, pressed on both mc (?) and cd formats, the tracks on BoC Maxima range from previously released material to songs which to this day have yet to see wide re-release. Many of the tracks featured on this disc would later be chosen for the track listing of Music Has The Right To Children, though with some differences (notably on One Very Important Thought.)
This release was broadcasted in full on France's Helter Skelter's radio programme in 2002.
Wildlife Analysis, Boc Maxima, Roygbiv, Turquoise Hexagon Sun and One Very Important Thought later appeared on Music Has the Right to Children. Everything You Do Is a Balloon, June 9th, Nlogax and Turquoise Hexagon Sun also appear on Hi Scores'. Rodox Video, Nova Scotia Robots, Skimming Stones, Carcan, M9 and Original Nlogax appeared on A Few Old Tunes (albeit in slightly different forms). A longer version of Chinook appears on the Aquarius single.
At 5:17, the version of Sixtyniner that appears is shorter than the version on the original Twoism release. However, when Twoism was publicly released in 2002, this 5:17 version was used instead.
As of 2008, Niagara, Red Moss, Concourse and Whitewater are exclusive to this release.

    1. "Wildlife Analysis" – 1:37
    2. "Chinook" – 4:39

BOARDS OF CANADA - A Few Old Tunes

A Few Old Tunes seems to be sourced from a cassette tape containing a (presumably) hand-selected set of pre-BoC Maxima tracks. The leaking of these tracks to p2p networks (Soulseek, originally) provided much drama on WATMM.

    Samples/Lyrics

A sample from a porn movie in P:C:.
Large chunks of the Colonel Abrams song "Trapped" in "Trapped (version)".
A sample from an advertisement for a cleaning product in Devil.
A sample from the British game show Blockbusters in the song of the same name.
"The Way You Show" contains a loop sampled from "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang.

BOARDS OF CANADA - Twoism EP

Limited to roughly 100 copies and distributed privately by Boards of Canada themselves via their Music70 label, 1995's Twoism successfully landed the brothers a recording contract with the highly respected indie-electronica label SKAM Records. Public availability of original copies of this work were largely thanks to the efforts of early BoC webmaster The Cosmic Crofter, who received permission to distribute back copies to interested fans through the EHX website and the IDM mailing list. [1]
Effectively representing the earliest known official output from the duo (and almost totally unavailable until its repressing in 2002), the original Twoism release has been highly sought after and has been known to sell for over $1,000 in online auctions. When asked by HMV about the obscenely high prices the record was going for, Marcus Sandison replied wryly that "[s]ome people have clearly got too much money on their hands" (HMV Interview, 2002).
Some of the allure surrounding the release (and perhaps contributing to its high selling price) stems from the inclusion of a credit to an early third member of Boards of Canada, Christopher Horne (credited as Chris H.) on the original release. This credit was removed from the artwork of the subsequent 2002 reissue on Warp Records.
Stylistically, the album foreshadows what was to come on subsequent Boards of Canada releases, with two of the tracks (Seeya Later and Smokes Quantity) being re-released on later records. One artistic deviation of note, however, is found in the track "Basefree," representing one of Boards of Canada's few forays into industrial territory.

    Tracks

    1. "Sixtyniner" – 5:40
    2. "Oirectine" – 5:11
    3. "Iced Cooly" – 2:22
    4. "Basefree" – 6:35
    5. "Twoism" – 6:06
    6. "Seeya Later" – 4:33
    7. "Melissa Juice" – 1:32
    8. "Smokes Quantity" – 3:07
    9. "1986 Summer Fire" – 1:36

BOARDS OF CANADA - Trans Canada Highway EP

Trans Canada Highway is an EP by Boards of Canada. As described by Boards of Canada and Warp Records, the EP "visits a darker place, a glacial place, away from the warmth and light of The Campfire Headphase." Those who ordered the EP directly from Warp also received a sticker and a free copy of the Dayvan Cowboy music video.
Originally scheduled for release on 06/06/06 (perhaps to further their occult mythos), the release date was bumped up to 29 May 2006 (a day later in the US), due to what was described on the Warp website as "unanticipated satanic activity." The nature of this activity, whether it was directly related to Boards of Canada or not, has never been explained.
The EP garnered relatively lukewarm reception by critics and by many in the idm community, the latter of whom were suspicious about the commercial ambitions suggested by the re-release of "Dayvan Cowboy" as a single. Nevertheless, tracks such as "Left Side Drive" remain classics with the general Boards of Canada fanbase.
The ep was released on both CD and 12" formats. The latter was pressed on white vinyl.
In addition to the standard release, there is also a white label promo/test pressing on black vinyl which is identical in content to the official Trans Canada release. The CD version of the promo/test, however, is limited exclusively to the tracks "Dayvan Cowboy" and "Skyliner". The Japanese version of the ep (in cd format) on Beat Records additionally includes a 'Bonus Video' called "Invocation". This short .mpg file was also available in Flash fomat on the Trans Canada Highway microsite.

    Tracks

    1. "Dayvan Cowboy" – 5:01
    2. "Left Side Drive" – 5:20
    3. "Heard From Telegraph Lines" – 1:09
    4. "Skyliner" – 5:40
    5. "Under The Coke Sign" – 1:31
    6. "Dayvan Cowboy (Odd Nosdam Remix)" – 9:01

BOARDS OF CANADA - Helter Skelter Radio Show
A French radio programme, broadcast Fri 22 Feb 2002, on Aligre FM 93.1 to Paris and its suburbs [1].
A 90-minute show (7:30-9:00 PM). The show in question was a Boards of Canada special, and a streaming RealAudio version may be found at the above site: go to the "Live" section, and you will see a "special broadcasts" dropdown list. Select "boards of canada (february 2002)" from this list.
This is good listening, especially for those who are only familiar with the "Music" and "Geogaddi" albums, since it contains several tracks from elsewhere, making it a good "sampler" for BoC's less familiar work (including some of their remixes).
