Review: Metal-Observer (-/10)
Oh, look here! A tribute-album, where did that come from, been aeons since I last heard of one of this species. So who has been the victim, ehm, tributed party? I see pumpkins, have to be HELLOWEEN - indeed! Well, my euphoria isn't the biggest (no, I like HELLOWEEN), but let's take a listen, maybe it will work out after all.
The Italian Epic-Metalians of RHAPSODY start this thing off, taking on "Guardians". And what should I say, this song in the typical RHAPSODY-bombast sounds good, very good! The pompous keyboard-passages and Fabio Lione's vocals almost make me suspect that somebody put an original song on this CD (I emphasize almost!)... Good start. Next are the Finnish shooting-stars of SONATA ARCTICA with "I Want Out", which we already know off their "Successor"-EP and I still think that it is too close to the original, not bad, but well, just too close.
HEAVEN'S GATE - "A Little Time". The Hammond-organ is OK, but the whole arrangement isn't my thing, METALIUM's "Ride The Sky" also cannot convince me, but that has completely different reasons. The main reason is that ever since I have seen this song live with Rick Mythiasin (STEEL PROPHET) and GAMMA RAY this song doesn't work without the Mythman anymore. That version has been the non-plus-ultra, the perfect combination, the paragon of excellence!
Oh, I think that I'll have to speed up things a little bit before the readers will fall asleep... Luca Turilli has stuffed "I'm Alive" into the sound of his solo-album, good. MORIFADE's "Judas" is good, but nothing special, I like their original songs faaaar better. "Eagle Fly Free" by VISION DIVINE is more interpreted than their "Final Countdown", but somehow the spark won't really catch flame. BRAINSTORM - "Savage". Whoa, that's what I call crunch! The original hadn't been that heavy, both thumbs up!
OK, "Future World" has been Italianised by LABYRINTH, the keyboards really suit the song, good one. At "Save Us" by CYDONIA I can't stand the voice, but who likes typically American Progressive-Power-vocals might find a revelation there. "Victim Of Fate" has received a very dry guitar-sound by SQUEALER, add to that the typically rough vocals, I like it.
"Halloween" has been taken on by the Spaniards of DARK MOOR, with female vocals, more keyboards and a lot more epic overall, a really good version. Well, and the end is made up by another Italian band, SECRET SPHERE, which are offering us "How Many Tears". Too unspectacular for me, the version of their countrymen GRAVEWORM is a whole lot more original and better.
So, to finally come to a conclusion, "The Keepers Of Jericho" is a good tribute, with much light and some shade, but still they are to be ranked among the better of their kind, the choice of the bands and the musical execution is good, so as a fan you might really want to have this one.
