Charlie Chaplin A Dog's Life (1918)

Charlie (the tramp) is sleeping rough by a fence in town, as is Scraps, his canine equivalent. Charlie steals hot dogs from a vendor until he is spotted by a policeman. Evading the law, he looks for work at the employment office but the competition is fierce and he is persistently pushed to the end of the queue.

Outside again, Charlie and Scraps search for food. The dog gets into trouble with a gang of dogs raiding a butcher's shop. He is rescued by Charlie and a friendship develops. Outside a lively dance hall Charlie pinches food from a lunch wagon and again succeeds in escaping the policeman's attentions even when the owner hits Charlie on the head with a German sausage. He makes himself scarce by going into the Green Lantern, a dance hall, where he has to hide Scraps in his trousers. The tail however, sticks out from a tear in the cloth. As Charlie sits next to the drummer in the band, the dog's tail beats the drum. The raucous act on stage is replaced by Edna, an ing?nue singing a heartrending ballad, which reduces the audience to tears.

Edna goes to the park with her mother and father. The women doze off on a bench while the father plays a hide-and-seek game with a girl. While he is blindfolded, Charlie leads him into a lake. The mother and daughter on the bench chat to Charlie and invite him home for dinner. The father returns home with a friend. Charlie rushes upstairs and disguises himself by dressing as a woman, shaving his moustache. Charlie flirts with the father and his friend who are much taken with the elegant young lady until his skirt becomes detached and all is revealed. Charlie tries to effect a happy ending in pantomime style with all parties reconciled.

Charlie tries to serve a customer with tarts but they stick to his hands and an absent-minded gesture sends one into the eyes of a customer. He goes below to the kitchens where the bakers have decided to go on strike, and is ordered to do their work. He carries a sack of flour through the tearoom, knocking everything in sight, and finally drops it down the trapdoor. The strikers meanwhile are planning to blow up the bakery and plant a stick of dynamite in a loaf of bread. He returns to the bakery, and deftly shows his method of making doughnuts to the proprietor's wife. He helps her up the ladder leaving floury handprints on her back, which arouses her husband's jealousy. Charlie fights with every weapon he can find and appears likely to emerge victorious when the doctored loaf explodes in the oven.

Charlie meets a couple and agrees to care for the man's crippled uncle. After the couple breaks up the man's new girl drops some eggs which Charlie slips on while trying to control the wheelchair. Charlie sets up the uncle near another wheelchair on a jetty, from which he lifts a beggar's cup and "invalid" sign. These he places with the uncle, and money begins to roll in. Charlie takes the money and buys himself a drink. Returning, he gets to know the abandoned young woman. After pushing the uncle and his chair into the drink and battling the beggar and two policemen (one of whom arrests the uncle), Charlie beats up his rival and gets the girl.

The idea of the film was apparently given to Chaplin by a young reporter, who told him about the production line system in Detroit, which was turning its workers into nervous wrecks. In the film, Charlie becomes literally trapped in the machine and, in one of his finest patches of comic invention, is battered and buffeted by an automatic feeding machine introduced by his bosses to save time and money. Cured after his breakdown, he is arrested when he picks up a red flag that has fallen off the back of a lorry, and runs down the street to return it, exactly the same time as a left-wing demonstration comes round the corner. He meets ‘The Gamine’ (Paulette Goddard) in the back of the police van, who has also been arrested for stealing bread. From then on the theme is about two nondescripts trying to get along in modern times. “Smile, though your heart is breaking …”

Charlie Chaplin - The Gold Rush (1925)


The Gold Rush (1925) is the quintessential Chaplin/Little Tramp film, with a balance of slapstick comedy and pantomime, social satire, and emotional and dramatic moments of tenderness. It was Chaplin's own personal favorite film, that showcases the classic Tramp character (referred to as "The Little Fellow" in the re-release version) as a romantic idealist and lone gold prospector at the turn of the century, with his cane, derby, distinctive walk, tight shabby suit, and mustache.

A lone prospector ventures into Alaska looking for gold. He gets mixed up with some burly characters and falls in love with the beautiful Georgia. He tries to win her heart with his singular charm
